North to West
April 2018
The idea was to share some of our beautiful Western Cape mountain riding with our friends from up North before they would cut their trip short and head home. The remaining crew of four would head West across the Northern Cape, bound for the coast. A wave hunting recce of sorts and a chance to get deep into the desolate stretches of sand tracks and far out camp spots, the Weskus holds an allure that is tough to explain.
From Cape Town we rode North through the Cederberg, without much of a plan except for a few landmarks to visit and ideas for re-supplies. We got seriously lucky and were welcomed into campsites and local farmers households with open arms. Always having just enough fuel and food to continue moving forward.
We continued onwards toward Niewoudtvile, as we began our drop off the escarpment and kept moving North to Kliprand, we found massive granite boulders rising out of red dust. We then began to traverse West, passing through equally wild and beautiful country on route to Garies and onwards to the coast. Finally, our route continued South along the coast bound for Cape Town.
We took it slow and steady, enjoyed the sights and opportunities to explore the wild places, meeting some pretty incredible people along the way and everything always worked itself out.
Last minute daylight decisions, lift the fence and hide out for the night - or sleep next to the road…
We built a moto-fort and slept in the middle
First flat tyre and the banter is in full swing
Second flat tyre, 30 minutes later
The Garies hotel, cheaper than the local campsite and completely empty except for our dirty bunch.
We made it to the coast
